英语四级词汇讲解丨考点归纳：differ
On average，fathers spoke less than mothers did，but they did not differ in thelength of utterances or proportion of questions asked.
英语四级译文:
平均来看，父亲说的话比母亲少，但他们的语句长度或提问次数基本差不多。
四级词汇讲解:
本句是由but连接的并列句，主干是fathers spoke but they did not differ。than引导的是比较结构，其中did指代的是前面的spoke;过去分词asked作questions的后置定语，两者之间为被动关系。
on average的意思是“平均”。如:
Japanese people on average live much longer than Americans.日本人的平均寿命要比美国人长得多。
deffer in的意思是“在……上有区别”。如:
Germany and French differ in this respect.德语和法语在这方面有所不同。
utterance的意思是“话语，言语，言论”。
英语四级考点归纳:
differ意为“有区别”，具体用法如下:
※ differ from意为“与……有区别”。如:
Humans differ from other animals in tie ability to speak.人与其他动物的不同之处在于人能说话。
※ differ ( with sb. ) about/on/over sth，意为“(与某人)在某方面意见相左”。如:
The two doctors differed about how to tread the disease.两位医生在如何治疗这种疾病方面意见有分歧。
