the need for birth cont rol methods has developed fairly recently , with the desire among many women to be able to decide when they want to have a baby . at the same time ther e is a growing awa renes s of the problem of a rapidly incr easing world population .
this problem of a rising world population is la rgely the result of improved medical skills , which have lowered the death rat e and , at the same time, raised the bir th rate by increasing live birth s and the number of babies who s urvive early childhood . there is a growing r ealization that food production cannot keep pace with these incr eases , the r esult of which is that in some count ries people are already starving to death while many million s more suffer f rom malnut rition . t his problem is fur the r complicated by the fact that in places like america and europe we obtain by t rade and con sume far mor e food and resources like oil than , say , the average indian , thus leaving even less for the people in the underdeveloped a reas to survive on .
world population is rising at a rat e of two pe r cent a yea r ; this means an addition of 70 million people a year to the present popula tion of more than 3 , 500 million . t he rearest riking regional differences in the population growth t rends .
the fastest growing region is latin america which includes south and cent ral america and the caribbean , while af rica and asia closely follow latin america . however , the la rgest absolute addition to the world population is in asia which at present contain s about thr ee-fif ths of the people of the world .
